Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a colorful mix of personalities, and a thrilling plot featuring divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences increasing in influence within the city.

Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and presented the premier party of heroes who will split off from the main group to begin their independent quest, distinct from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Considering a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Introduction, weaving together the characters’ stories before branching into three separate parties: Soldiers, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are scarce.

Upon first impression, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might seem out of place, but the developments of the third episode show why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

First, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his own means, entering the hidden lair, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the powerful objects to sell off.

The antagonist then paid off his obligations and escaped to a secure base in the remote area, above the city, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each character has a specific drive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the northern area and advises that it is a hostile environment.
  • The strong character and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could enable the party reach areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his deliverance and will now accompany him anywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are hunted by the rulers that control the city for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The cleric betrayed House Halovar and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the family.

This results in them little choice but to head to the northern region in pursuit of Casimir.

What’s Next?

From the recent installment’s Cooldown, we find out that the warrior group won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Questers and Schemers parties.

Viewers can look forward to learning which characters will be assigned to which table in the season’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on October 24.
