Historical Context
Nottingham Forest v Malmö and past encounters. The these sides have a unique relationship, also meeting in Forest's previous European adventure in the mid-90s European competition, but it is the continental championship 46 years ago that entwines these two together, with the record-breaking signing the English forward heading the only goal of a pretty miserable final to claim legendary status for the the English club.
"Forest's famous bosses, modestly dressed amid all the colour and celebration, stood for a moment on a bench serenely viewing the celebrations," commented the writer. Theirs has been an outstanding achievement that it is unlikely to be replicated – from the lower league to continental competition in three seasons."
It's also interesting to pause a little on Malmö, who became the initial and final Swedish club to make the championship match under manager Houghton.
This match is a far cry from that peak, closer perhaps to the previous continental meeting between Forest and Malmö in that era. Forest are absolutely buzzing after defeating Liverpool convincingly at the famous ground on Saturday, while Malmö have been inactive since 9 November following the completion of Allsvenskan. The smart money is on the home team tonight.
Numerous other matches on offer in this live coverage. Rangers have already been defeated by a Portuguese opponent this season. Rangers are at the foot of the 36-team Europa League standings at the middle of the initial phase with exactly zero. They badly want a victory if they are to have any chance of achieving a late surge for a playoff spot.
We'll keep you up to date with all the late games and provide the current standings from the previous games, including Villa vs Young Boys and the Dutch-Scottish clash.
