A recent study reveals that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such drugs should be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
